Nature Camp 2025
  2025-12-15
15 students of SRS attended a three days School Nature Camp & Educational Excursion to Bunkulung between 15th-17th December.
The Nature Camp was organized by the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) under it's Place Based Education (PBE) project.
From SRS 13 Green Scouts along with 2 senior class XI students participated in the camp. In addition 14 students from Panchabati H.Sec. School also participated in the event.
The event highlighted the philosophy behind the PBE initiative in Nature Education providing a forum for the young participants to interact with each other and learn about Nature and their environment.
Mr. Yougesh Tamang, Project Associate, Education & PBE (ATREE) introduced the objectives and activities under PBE and also imparted his knowledge on resource mapping and spoke about the importance of nature education in the present day.
Dr. Saibal Sengupta who was the resource person for the camp introduced the participants to the world of birds, the basics of birding and in addition also made technical presentations on Biogeography of Darjeeling, Biodiversity of the Eastern Himalaya with specific focus on the Kanchenjunga Landscape (KL). Dr. Saibal also briefed the youngsters about butterfly diversity of the region and techniques of photographing butterflies and odonates.
Early morning group birding sessions, exposure visits to community managed farms, pisciculture units, pineapple orchards and apiary farms kept the children busy and engaged in learning.
While the early morning trips aimed at polishing birding skills and documentation the daytime was a mix of technical sessions coupled with butterfly photography and resource mapping and preparing posters for presentation. The event culminated with each group of students making an oral poster presentation on what they had learned & experienced at the camp and how they would take the message home. In the evenings the children gathered around a campfire and took part in cultural singing and dance.
The participating students, teachers and resource persons are all grateful to the Community at Bunkulung, in particular the Bunkulung Apiary &Agro Beneficiary Committee who provided accommodation and fooding for everyone.
All participants were presented with certificates by Mr. Yougesh Tamang (ATREE) who had planned the event meticulously and had a key role in its grand success.
